A Family’s Guide to Paying for In-Home Care

For most families, the very first question about in-home care is also the most stressful: how will we pay for it? You deserve a clear, honest answer — so here's a plain-English guide to the real options.

How in-home care is priced

Non-medical in-home care is billed at an hourly rate that depends on the hours and the level of care needed, often with a small per-visit minimum. Because AGAPE care is flexible — from a couple of hours a day up to 24-hour support — you only pay for the help you actually use, with no long-term contract. At your free assessment, we'll give you a clear quote with no surprises.

1. Private pay

This is the most common and most flexible option. Families pay directly, adjust hours as needs change, and keep full control of the care plan. Many families combine private pay with one of the options below.

2. Long-term care insurance

If your loved one has a long-term care insurance policy, there's a good chance it covers non-medical home care like ours. Policies vary, so it pays to check the details — and our administrative team helps you file the paperwork and provides the documentation your insurer needs.

3. Veterans benefits (VA Aid & Attendance)

This one is often overlooked. If your loved one is a wartime veteran or the surviving spouse of one, the VA Aid & Attendance benefit can provide a significant monthly amount to help pay for in-home care. Eligibility depends on service, income, and care needs. If you think you might qualify, ask us — we'll point you in the right direction.

4. What about Medicare and Medicaid?

Medicare generally does not cover ongoing non-medical home care (it focuses on short-term skilled care after a hospital stay). California's Medicaid program (Medi-Cal) may help some families through specific programs. We're happy to talk through where you might fit.

A quick checklist before you commit

  • Ask for the hourly rate, minimums, and cancellation policy in writing.
  • Confirm the agency is licensed, insured, and bonded (AGAPE is — License #154700016).
  • Check whether they help with insurance and VA paperwork (we do).
  • Make sure care can flex up or down as needs change (ours does).
You shouldn't have to become an insurance expert to get help for someone you love. That's our job.

We'll walk you through every option during a free, no-obligation assessment. Call (661) 835-0364 or see our How to Pay for Care page.
