7 Questions to Ask Before Hiring a Home-Care Agency

Choosing a home-care agency is one of the most personal decisions a family can make. You're not buying a product — you're deciding who gets to walk into your parent's home, learn their routines, and help with the most private moments of the day. In Bakersfield and the surrounding areas, families have real choices, and the agencies are not all the same.

Before you sign anything, ask these seven questions. We've included what a good answer sounds like, so you can tell the difference between an agency that's built around your family and one that's built around filling a shift.

1. Are your caregivers insured and bonded by your agency?

What a good answer sounds like: "Yes — every caregiver is insured and bonded by us, not left to carry their own coverage." This protects your family and means the agency stands behind its people. At AGAPE, all caregivers are insured and bonded by AGAPE In Home Care, Inc.

2. How do you screen and choose caregivers?

What a good answer sounds like: A clear description of background checks, credential verification, and a real screening process — not "we hire good people." Ask whether they choose for character as well as experience. The right caregiver is skilled and someone you'd feel comfortable welcoming into your home.

3. Will my loved one see the same caregivers, or a rotating cast?

What a good answer sounds like: "We aim for consistency, so you see familiar faces." Consistency is everything for seniors — especially anyone living with memory loss. An agency that can't tell you who's coming tomorrow is an agency that will feel like strangers every visit.

4. How do you match a caregiver to my family?

What a good answer sounds like: A real process, not a scheduling algorithm. We start with a home conference meeting to understand personality, interests, and needs — so we can pair your loved one with someone who genuinely fits their world, not just their calendar.

5. Is there a long-term contract or a minimum I'm locked into?

What a good answer sounds like: "No long-term contract — you can start, pause, or adjust care as life changes." Your needs will shift. You should be able to go from a few hours a week to full 24-hour care, and back again, without penalty.

6. What happens if there's a problem, or I call after hours?

What a good answer sounds like: A real person answers — day or night. Ask who you'd reach at 9pm on a Sunday. An office that only exists 9-to-5 leaves families alone in exactly the moments care matters most. AGAPE keeps a 24-hour dispatch line for this reason.

7. What exactly is included — and what isn't?

What a good answer sounds like: A plain-English list. Non-medical home care should cover personal care, meal preparation, light housekeeping, medication reminders, errands and transportation, companionship, and hospital sitting. A good agency is just as clear about what it doesn't do (skilled medical care) and will help you find the right resource if you need it.

The question behind all the questions

Every one of these really asks the same thing: will this agency treat my family the way I would? Trust your gut. The right agency answers openly, never pressures you, and treats the free assessment as a conversation — not a sales pitch.

Before you trust someone with the person you love, you deserve straight answers. Ask hard questions — a good agency welcomes them.
