Guidance for your caregiving journey

Clear, honest answers to the questions Kern County families ask us most.

Getting started

10 signs it may be time for in-home help

The need for a little help rarely arrives all at once. It shows up in small changes families often notice on a visit home. Any one of these can be normal — but several together are a sign it’s worth a conversation:

  • Unopened mail, unpaid bills, or missed appointments piling up
  • Less food in the fridge, weight loss, or skipped meals
  • Difficulty with stairs, standing, or getting up from a chair
  • Bruising or a recent fall (or a “near miss”)
  • Wearing the same clothes, or a change in grooming and hygiene
  • Forgetting medications — or taking them incorrectly
  • A messier home than usual, or laundry going undone
  • Withdrawing from friends, church, or favorite activities
  • Confusion with familiar tasks or routes
  • You’re worried when you leave — and relieved when you’re there

Starting with just a few hours a week of help often makes all the difference — and keeps a small challenge from becoming a crisis. A free in-home assessment is a no-pressure way to find out what would help most.

Choosing an agency

How to choose the right home-care agency

Not all home care is the same. Before you trust anyone with your family, ask these questions:

  • Are you licensed, insured, and bonded? This protects your family financially and holds the agency to state standards. (AGAPE is licensed #154700016, insured and bonded.)
  • How do you screen and background-check caregivers? You’re inviting someone into your home — vetting matters.
  • Will my loved one have consistent caregivers? Familiar faces build trust and better care.
  • Can care flex as needs change? Look for no long-term contract and the ability to scale from a few hours to 24-hour care.
  • How are rates, minimums, and cancellations handled? Ask for everything in writing.
  • Are you local? A locally owned agency answers the phone, knows the community, and shows up.

Trust your instincts. The right agency will happily answer every one of these and make you feel heard — not rushed.

Aging in place

Making home safer for a senior

Most falls happen at home and most are preventable. A few simple changes go a long way:

  • Remove throw rugs and clear walking paths of clutter and cords
  • Add grab bars in the bathroom and a non-slip mat in the tub
  • Improve lighting, especially on stairs and nighttime paths to the bathroom
  • Keep everyday items within easy reach to avoid step-stools
  • Wear supportive, non-slip footwear indoors
  • Consider a medical-alert device for extra peace of mind

An AGAPE caregiver can help with mobility and daily tasks while spotting hazards before they cause harm.
